The Upper Snake River is known worldwide for its crystal-clear waters, unique geology, numerous recreation adventures, and amazing varieties of wildlife. The ability to experience wild water, world-class fishing, great hiking, and memorable camping are just a few of the reasons we all visit the Snake River Canyon. The privilege of use carries the responsibility to help care for this unique watershed. Each summer from the June to August, the portion of the Snake River between South Park Bridge and Sheep Gulch hosts over 200,000 visitors. This is an extremely crowded and sought after section of the Snake River due to the great variety in boating challenges, fishing opportunities and beautiful scenery. Since 1998 the Bridger-Teton National Forest has required groups of 16 – 30 people to obtain a non-commercial group use permit.
Getting there
From Jackson, WY: Head south on Highway 89 from Jackson, go through the Hoback Junction roundabout and continue heading south toward Alpine, Wy. Congratulations, you are in the Snake River Canyon! All river access points are signed along the highway. Take a left into at the West Table Boat Ramp. Please check in for your permit at the West Table Boat Ramp kiosk.
From Alpine, WY: Head north on Highway 89 toward Jackson. Turn right into West Table Boat Ramp to check in at the kiosk. If you hit the Hoback Junction, you’ve gone too far.
