Old Rag Mountain Tickets

Welcome to Old Rag Mountain, one of Shenandoah National Park’s most popular hikes. Most often done as a loop originating near the Park’s eastern boundary, this experience offers incredible views of the park’s federally designated wilderness. The 9.4-mile loop which incorporates the Ridge, Ridge Access, and Saddle Trails is extremely strenuous and includes a significant rock scramble. Hikers need to research the requirements on the Park’s website and be sure they are fully prepared before embarking. Due to the hike’s popularity, to provide a positive visitor experience, increase visitor safety, and protect natural resources, a day-use ticket is required to visit Old Rag.

Note: Do not rely exclusively on your mobile GPS, Google Maps, or similar automated navigation systems to get to the Old Rag parking area. Routes can be misleading and incorrect, and cell service is unreliable. To arrive at the main parking area, where most people start hiking, please follow the directions below: Sperryville, VA to Old Rag Parking: From Route 211, turn onto Route 522 and follow it south for 0.8 mile. Turn right on Route 231, follow 8 miles, turn right onto Route 601 and follow signs to the Old Rag parking area, approximately 3 miles. Madison, VA to Old Rag Parking: From Route 29 Business, turn onto Route 231 and follow it for 12.8 miles. Turn left onto Route 602. Follow signs for the parking area, approximately 3 miles.
