The Opal Hill trail consists of rugged singletrack that has been naturally sculpted by rainwater runoff, resulting in an uneven, rocky surface where thick-soled footwear is highly recommended. There is zero natural shade along the entire route, so visitors should plan for direct sun exposure, high winds at the summit, and dry desert temperatures. It is an ideal destination for winter, spring, and late autumn treks when the weather is cooler.

Getting there

To reach the Opal Hill Trailhead in Fruita from Grand Junction, take I-70 West to Exit 19, turn left onto CO-340 East, and then make a right onto Kingsview Road to follow the access signs to the trailhead.
